Saying No Without Apology

A title year produces more invitations than hours. Learning to decline clearly, kindly and without a paragraph of justification has been its own education.

A title year produces far more invitations than hours. Somewhere in the middle of it I noticed that every refusal I sent contained three sentences of justification and one apology.

Over-explaining invites negotiation

A long explanation reads as a problem to be solved. The other person then solves it, and you are back where you started. A short no closes the loop.

I am not able to take this on. Thank you for thinking of me.

That is a complete answer. It took me an embarrassingly long time to be able to send it without adding anything.

Decide the criteria before the request arrives

I know what my year is about: education, confidence for women, and Indian textiles. Anything outside those three gets declined without deliberation, which means I am not renegotiating my priorities in every inbox.

  • Yes, if it fits the three.
  • Not now, if it fits but the timing does not.
  • No, kindly and briefly, for everything else.

Kindness is not the same as availability

Declining warmly costs nothing. Most people accept a clear no far better than a slow, guilty yes followed by a rushed job.

What it protected

My teaching, mostly. And the quiet hours where the actual work happens, which are always the first thing to disappear when everything else is treated as urgent.
