How I Prepare for the Pageant Question Round

Thirty seconds, one microphone and a question you did not choose. The question round is where preparation becomes visible, and it is the part most contestants leave to luck.

The question round is thirty seconds long and decides more than people admit. It is also the only part of a pageant where teaching for a living is an unfair advantage, because I stand in front of an unimpressed audience every working day.

Do not memorise answers, build frames

Memorised answers collapse the moment the question shifts. Frames survive. I prepared four of them.

  • Position, reason, example, close.
  • What I believe, what I have seen, what I would do.
  • The honest tension, my side of it, why.
  • A short story, then the point it proves.

Any question can be poured into one of these. In the moment I am not searching for words, only for a shape.

Practise out loud, badly, often

Silent preparation is not preparation. I practised in the car, in the kitchen and to my own reflection, and the first fifteen attempts were terrible. That is the point. You are training your mouth, not your mind.

The goal is not a perfect answer. The goal is an answer that sounds like a person.

Answer the question you were asked

Judges notice deflection instantly. If you do not know something, say that you do not, then say what you do know. Honesty reads as composure, and composure is what is actually being scored.

Keep one true sentence ready

I always know one sentence that is unmistakably mine, about education, or about women being allowed to take up space. When a question opens even slightly in that direction, I use it. It is not a trick, it is simply knowing what I stand for before someone asks me under a light.

The last ten seconds

Land somewhere. Trailing off is the most common mistake, and it undoes an otherwise good answer. Finish the sentence, stop speaking, hold the microphone still and let the silence sit. It will feel much longer to you than to anyone watching.
